How to Write a News Update

News update is a timely account of recent, interesting or significant events or developments. It usually starts with the most important information — the “who, what, when, where and why” of an event or development. It’s followed by more detail and background, like quotes and more context, that readers might want or need to know. Finally, it concludes with additional details or context that aren’t as critical but still add interest and relevance to the story. A news update can be in the form of a short article or a headline that links to a fuller story.

News articles are generally written in third person, unless there is compelling reason to use first or second. If a name is used in the article, be sure to use the full first and last names or both initials so that you don’t confuse readers with an abrupt change of person.
