Developing Story

Developing story is the process of transforming an initial idea or concept into a structured narrative with characters, plots, and themes. It’s an essential step that allows writers to refine and expand their ideas, ensuring that the final script resonates with their audience.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to developing story, but many writers use various pre-writing techniques to create a well-structured plot before drafting their work. Plotters, for example, often develop their stories in intricate detail before putting pen to paper, while Pantsers complete very little pre-writing and prefer to discover their plots as they write. Still, both approaches can be effective in creating an engaging plot.

A common method of plot development involves using a progressive series of obstacles to propel the protagonist toward their ultimate goal. This is often known as the ‘Rising Action’ of the plot and can be used to develop the character arc, deepen relationships, increase stakes, and escalate the conflict. It can also be used to introduce subplots, which can complicate the protagonist’s journey and add a level of tension to their conflict.

Another important aspect of plot development is identifying the ‘LIE’ that the protagonist must confront in order to achieve their plot goal. This inner obstacle can serve as the foundation of their character arc and reveal your story’s theme. It’s also a great way to ensure that the end of your story ties up all loose ends and proves what your story is really about.
