Global Affairs Major

Global Affairs students gain a sophisticated understanding of the world’s complex political, economic, cultural and environmental challenges. They also acquire the practical skills needed to tackle many of today’s most pressing concerns.

Global affairs is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses the study of international politics, culture and history, foreign policy, economics and security issues, human rights and environmental sustainability. The major offers a wide array of opportunities to learn about the connections between world governments, economies and cultures through courses taught by distinguished faculty members from across campus.

A major in global affairs is an ideal preparation for careers in diplomacy, law, international business and government service as well as for graduate programs in public or private affairs. Students also can use their degree to pursue careers in academia, nongovernmental organizations and research firms.

In addition to a course of study, the major requires that students complete one language course designated L4 in a modern language other than English. Taking this course for credit is not optional, as it is necessary to achieve the level of fluency required for successful participation in a range of international professional activities.

A major in global affairs is also encouraged to participate in an internship and/or a study abroad experience in the junior year, or during a summer term or semester program approved by DUS. Courses taken abroad may count toward the major requirements with DUS approval, but only as electives. A major in global affairs who wants to take a summer or term-time course for credit should consult with DUS as early as possible, in order to devise an appropriate course of study and to seek DUS approval before the course starts.
