What Is World News?

World news is the jargon used by media outlets to refer to international, global or foreign news. It can be distinct from domestic or national news, but also may include some aspects of a local event that are of a worldwide interest, such as war journalism (though the distinction between world and national news often blurs when a conflict involves belligerent nations themselves). There are several subfields of world news: international politics, international economics, foreign diplomacy, international religion and humanitarian crises.

Correspondents working abroad, whether full-time employees of a news source or freelancers on retainer to multiple organizations (sometimes known as stringers), are responsible for gathering materials for world news stories from the field. They typically file reports to a news editor on a regular basis and receive information from a wide variety of sources, including local officials and residents, members of the community and local media, as well as events they personally witness.

Major news agencies prepare hard news and feature articles for distribution to their clients, which typically are a mix of traditional newspapers, radio and television broadcasters and, in the case of the earliest wire services, other news organizations, governments and intelligence agencies.
